Ode to Joy
In the movie Immortal Beloved, the ode to joy chorus is portrayed in three different ways, but it is always sung by the same person at the end of each movement. First, there is a reprise of the first movement's ode to joy chorus at the end of the final movement. Second, there are two variations of the ode to joy chorus that are performed prior to and after the final movement. Third, there is a new variation of the ode to joy chorus that is performed as an encore just before the credits roll. It should be noted that these variations all belong to one person who sings them repeatedly throughout the film.
The final movement is a song of celebration and joy. The movement is characterized by wide leaps that create a sense of excitement and that is why this piece was recognized as one of the famous pieces in all classical music. Since it is a reprise from the beginning of the film, it ties into how Jean’s life has changed since her death. Since she was reincarnated into another life, she can experience everything that she missed out on in her previous life. The second variation plays off this idea as well because she gets to experience everything for herself for a change. However, since this variation is played after things have already progressed in an earlier part of the film, it also symbolizes Jean getting what she deserves in her current life due to her hard work and dedication throughout her past lives. The final movement enable us search deeply for our wants; this may be either love or fame or both. I feel infinite joy from Immortal Beloved, because the movie is about human love and it is very real. The music expresses love, despair, hope and peace.
